About Inkheart

Based on the wildly popular children's book by Cornelia Funke, Inkheart is a film that incorporates an incredible amount of different fantasy elements to produce a mind boggling, heart pounding experience that is generally suitable for the whole family. People who have read the book are the likeliest to enjoy the movie, as some of the plot elements are tricky to follow onscreen. However, even younger kids will enjoy this movie and other than a few slightly scary moments and a bit of rough language, there is nothing inappropriate for parents to worry about.

Popular actor Brendan Fraser stars in this movie as Mo - short for Mortimer - "Silvertongue" Folchart. He is a character that has the magic ability to make items from a book leap off the page and come to life. He has a young daughter named Meggie who aspires to become a writer one day. Although Meggie is unaware of her father's capabilities, she does realize that something about her mother's disappearance is mysterious and that he knows something about it. This forms the backdrop for the plot of the film, as Mo travels the world in search of the titular book Inkheart.

Mo's wife long ago disappeared into the pages of this elusive book, and the antagonists in this movie came out of it. Capricorn and Dustfinger are the evil characters that provide the gist of the plot here, and the noble Mo must contend with them throughout the movie as they vie for the treasured book. During the film, Capricorn captures Mo, Meggie and Meggie's aunt (played by the talented Helen Mirren) and forces them to read portions of the book in order to build up his riches. Much action ensues due to these circumstances, and a number of clever plot twists keep viewers on the edge of their seats.

Inkheart is a family friendly movie that has just enough action and excitement in it to keep adults entertained as well as children. Those who have never read the book, though, might find themselves lost during certain parts of the movie. Overall, it is easy to follow and its talented cast goes a long way toward making this a pleasant piece of cinema. Young kids will find that the world and the characters depicted in this film really capture their imagination and they won't be able to stop talking about the various events in the movie for quite a long time.

Another great aspect of this film is that it extols the virtues of books. In today's world, too many kids simply do not read often enough. Ironically, watching this movie might pique their interest and get them to pick up a book to read.
